A Little Bit of History

Chipman Design Architecture has its roots in the early 1950s when Albert B. Chipman established one of the first professional practices devoted to retail design and planning. His son, architect John Chipman had been working abroad until 1979 when he returned to Illinois to join his father as he was approaching retirement. Building upon an existing base of regional main-street clients, John brought the company to a prominent position among the nation’s commercial architects.

At his father left in 1984, John re-directed the firm’s focus as he increasingly incorporated emerging computer technology to keep up with the continuous expansion of corporate retail clients. He is also known as a speaker and author of several trade industry articles and a nationally distributed retail design book.

With the firm’s retail design expertise solidly established by the late 1980s, he started to apply the same professional criteria to restaurant design, quickly achieving a national reputation that came to strengthen the company’s existing name as commercial architects.

By the mid-1990s, the firm had a staff of 70 and had become licensed throughout the United States. National recognition grew along with an impressive list of corporate clients, and in January 2004, the firm opened a West Coast office, now located in Pasadena, California. That national expansion has continued with a Manhattan office, establishing its East Coast presence.

Chipman Design Architecture has been one of America’s leading retail design firms for decades.
